South Africa secured their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after edging Burkina Faso 1-0 in their final Group B fixture on Tuesday in Casablanca.

The defending champions produced a disciplined performance, with Thembi Kgatlana scoring the decisive goal that kept Banyana Banyana's title defence alive.

The experienced forward broke the deadlock in the 21st minute, finishing confidently to give South Africa an early advantage.

Despite Burkina Faso's efforts to find an equaliser after the break, Banyana remained solid defensively and successfully protected their slender lead until the final whistle.

Kgatlana's first-half strike ultimately proved enough to hand South Africa all three points and confirm their place in the knockout stage.

The result, combined with Côte d'Ivoire's 2-1 victory over Tanzania, saw South Africa finish second in Group B, while Côte d'Ivoire advanced as group winners.

Banyana Banyana will now shift their attention to a mouth-watering quarter-final clash against tournament hosts Morocco.
