WAFCON 2026: Morocco Beat South Africa 2-1 to Reach Semi-Finals and Qualify for 2027 Women’s World Cup

Morocco have secured their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after defeating South Africa 2-1 in a thrilling quarter-final clash on Saturday.

The victory not only keeps the Atlas Lionesses' WAFCON title hopes alive but also guarantees Morocco a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Morocco made the stronger start and eventually broke the deadlock before extending their advantage early in the second half. Hanan Ait El Haj converted from the penalty spot in the 51st minute to put the hosts 2-0 ahead.

South Africa refused to give up and quickly responded through Thembi Kgatlana, who found the back of the net in the 67th minute to cut the deficit and give Banyana Banyana renewed belief.

The goal set up a tense final period as South Africa pushed for an equaliser, but Morocco's defence remained disciplined and held firm until the final whistle.

The 2-1 victory sends Morocco through to the WAFCON semi-finals, while South Africa's campaign comes to an end at the quarter-final stage.

More importantly for the Atlas Lionesses, their progression to the last four also confirms their qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup
