WAFCON 2026: Malawi cause a sensation with two consecutive group stage wins
After beating defending champions Nigeria 3–2 on the opening day, the Malawi women’s team defeated Egypt 3–1 on Saturday 1 August.
In their first appearance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, currently being held in Morocco, Malawi have been unstoppable. The Malawi women’s national team secured a second consecutive victory on Saturday during the second matchday of Group C.
Malawi took control of the match from the first half. Rose Kadzere opened the scoring in the 35th minute, making it 1–0. Faith Chinzimu doubled the lead before half-time, making it 2–0.
Temwa Chawinga added to Malawi’s tally in the second half. She scored her team’s third goal in the 68th minute, making it 3–0.
For Egypt, Iman Hassan salvaged some pride. She pulled one back in the 71st minute to make it 3–1.
Malawi thus secured their second consecutive victory in Group C of the tournament and qualified for the next round.
