WAFCON 2026: Justin Madugu Takes Full Responsibility After Super Falcons Quarter-Final Exit

Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has apologised to Nigerians and taken full responsibility following the team's disappointing quarter-final defeat at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The defeat ended Nigeria's hopes of reaching the semi-finals and securing direct qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, leaving the defending African champions facing another route to the global tournament through the playoffs.

Speaking after the game, Madugu acknowledged the disappointment felt by Nigerians but defended the effort of his players, insisting that the team gave everything on the pitch.

"I want to apologise to Nigerians over the team's inability to win today's game that would have qualified the team for the World Cup. The ladies did their best. We apologise and I take full responsibility for this disappointment. We still have a second chance and we will see what comes out of it."

Despite the setback, Madugu stressed that Nigeria still have an opportunity to achieve their ultimate objective. He called on the team to regroup quickly and make the most of the World Cup playoff route.

"We have a second chance, and we will give it our all to make sure we do not disappoint and go the same way the men did. We will do all we can to make sure we go through the playoff."

The Super Falcons must now put the quarter-final disappointment behind them and focus on their next opportunity to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Nigeria will face South Africa in the crucial playoff, with a place at the World Cup at stake.
