Ghana opened their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign with a 2-0 victory over tournament debutants Cape Verde in their Group D opener on Wednesday.

The Black Queens made a fast start at the Moulay Rachid Stadium, with Doris Boaduwaa breaking the deadlock just six minutes into the game. Boaduwaa finished calmly after being played through by Portia Boakye, giving Ghana an early advantage and setting the tone for the rest of the contest.

Cape Verde tried to respond but struggled to find a way past the Ghanaian defence, with the Black Queens maintaining control as they looked to extend their lead. Ghana eventually got their second goal in the 54th minute, although it came through an unfortunate moment for Cape Verde. Defender Eleia Vieira turned the ball into her own net to give the Black Queens a two-goal cushion.

Cape Verde were unable to find a response as Ghana comfortably managed the remainder of the match to secure all three points.

The victory gives the Black Queens an ideal start to their WAFCON 2026 campaign and moves them top of Group D for the time being.
