WAFCON 2026: Debutants Malawi Shock 10-Time Champions Nigeria 3-2 in Opening Match

WAFCON debutants Malawi have pulled off a stunning upset, defeating 10-time champions Nigeria 3-2 in their opening Group C match at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Rabat, Morocco.

The defending champions were unable to find a way through Malawi’s defence in a goalless first half, but the match changed dramatically after the break as the Scorchers took advantage of Nigeria’s defensive lapses.

Malawi finally broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute when Temwa Chawinga found the back of the net, sending the debutants into a shock lead.

Nigeria were still trying to recover when Malawi struck again six minutes later. Tabitha Chawinga doubled the advantage after capitalising on another defensive mistake, leaving the Super Falcons facing an unexpected two-goal deficit.

The Super Falcons were handed a lifeline deep into stoppage time when they won a penalty, with Rasheedat Ajibade stepping up to calmly convert in the second minute of added time.

However, Malawi immediately restored their two-goal advantage. Temwa Chawinga completed her brace in the fifth minute of stoppage time, putting Malawi 3-1 ahead and seemingly sealing a remarkable victory for the WAFCON debutants.

Nigeria responded once again, with Uchenna Kanu scoring in the ninth minute of added time to make it 3-2. The Super Falcons pushed for an equaliser in the final moments, but Malawi held on to secure a historic victory over the defending champions.
