WAFCON 2026: Algeria Win Historic Bronze Medal After Beating Morocco on Penalties

Algeria have secured a historic bronze medal at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations after defeating hosts Morocco 3-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the third-place play-off.

Morocco took the lead before half-time when Kautar Azraf found the back of the net, putting the hosts in front at the break.

Algeria refused to give up and continued searching for an equaliser. Their persistence finally paid off in the 83rd minute when Lina Boussaha scored to bring the game level.

Neither team could find a winner before the final whistle, sending the contest to a penalty shootout to decide the bronze medal.

Algeria kept their composure from the spot, winning 3-2 on penalties to claim third place and leave Morocco with fourth place.

The result caps a remarkable tournament for Farid Benstiti's side. Algeria reached the WAFCON semi-finals for the first time in their history and, in doing so, also secured their first-ever qualification for the FIFA Women's World Cup.

The Desert Foxes will now head to Brazil 2027 with a historic bronze medal and a place on the global stage to celebrate.
