Violence Erupts at OGC Nice as Terem Moffi and Jérémie Boga Attacked by Angry Fans
Super Eagles striker Terem Moffi has been signed off work after he and teammate Jérémie Boga were violently attacked by sections of OGC Nice supporters on Sunday night, shortly after the team returned from a 3–1 defeat to Lorient. The loss marked Nice’s sixth straight setback across all competitions, deepening tensions around the club.
When the team bus arrived at the training centre, around 400 agitated supporters were waiting. Players had been warned that tempers were high but still returned to the facility. Two ultras were allowed onto the bus to express their frustration, but what began as verbal confrontation quickly spiralled into violence once the players stepped off.
According to EuroSport, Moffi and Boga “were punched, kicked and spat on, with some of the blows said to be to their genitals,” and racist insults were hurled during the attack. Security staff were overwhelmed, and Nice goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf reportedly helped Boga escape while sporting director Florian Maurice was also assaulted. Moffi, already dealing with fitness issues, struggled to get into the building and required assistance from teammates.
Medical checks on Monday led to Moffi being placed on leave until Sunday due to the “physical and psychological impact,” while Boga received at least five days of medical leave. Both players have filed police complaints as investigations continue.
OGC Nice condemned the incident, saying: “The club understands the frustration… However, the incidents that occurred during this gathering are unacceptable… OGC Nice offers them its full support and condemns these acts in the strongest possible terms.”
The UNFP also denounced the attack, stating: “We condemn in the strongest possible terms the unacceptable violence… The physical and psychological integrity of those who make football is non-negotiable.”
