On the night of March 24, former world number one and winner of four Grand Slam tournaments, Naomi Osaka of Japan (WTA 229), advanced to the round of 16 in the hardcourt WTA 1000 event in Miami, USA.

In the second round, the Japanese player defeated Elina Svitolina of Ukraine (WTA 17) in straight sets in 1 hour and 31 minutes.

It was the 7th meeting between the two players. Osaka won their 4th encounter.

After the match, Naomi stated in the press conference that it was her best match of 2024:

"I definitely think it was one of my best matches, if not the best match, of this season. But I also want to keep improving with each match. Before the match, I knew she was a great player, and I had no choice but to play very well if I wanted a chance to win. So yes..."

In the round of 16 in Miami, Osaka will face the 23rd seed, Caroline Garcia.

Earlier in the tournament in Florida, Aryna Sabalenka was sensationally eliminated.
