Brazilian tennis player Joao Fonseca, born in 2006, made a successful start at the ATP 500 clay-court tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In the round of 16, the Brazilian defeated Arthur Fils of France, ranked 36th in the ATP, in straight sets in just 1 hour and 31 minutes.

This was the first meeting between the two players.

At just 17 years old, Fonseca, born on August 21, 2006, became the youngest tennis player in history to win a match at the ATP level.

Interestingly, Arthur Fils is the youngest winner of an ATP tournament. He is currently 19 years old (born on June 12, 2004).

In the quarterfinals of the Rio 500 event, Fonseca will face Cristian Garin of Chile, ranked 88th in the ATP. Garin won the trophy in Brazil in 2020.
