A violent brawl broke out in the Guinean city of Nzerekore after a penalty kick during a local football tournament. The match, held in honour of Guinean military leader Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, turned into a disaster in the 83rd minute when Nzérékoré was awarded a controversial penalty.

When a Laby FC player was sent off in the 68th minute, the game was briefly stopped, adding to the already high level of tension. But when N'Zérékoré was given a penalty, the crowd's ire grew, and violent altercations resulted. Fans surged onto the field, and what followed was a horrifying scene of chaos, with the stadium becoming a battlefield.

To control the situation, security personnel had to use tear gas, which caused people to rush. The stampede resulted in serious injuries and deaths; the death toll is estimated at 100. The exact number of casualties is still unknown, and local hospitals are overwhelmed with the wounded.

The Guinean government has expressed its condolences and is urging calm, emphasizing the need to prioritize emergency medical services for the injured.
