But when N'Zérékoré was given a penalty, the crowd's ire grew, and violent altercations resulted. Fans surged onto the field, and what followed was a horrifying scene of chaos, with the stadium becoming a battlefield.

To control the situation, security personnel had to use tear gas, which caused people to rush. The stampede resulted in serious injuries and deaths; the death toll is estimated at 100. The exact number of casualties is still unknown, and local hospitals are overwhelmed with the wounded.
