Victor Osimhen Explains Why He Rejected Galatasaray Captain’s Armband vs Alanyaspor

Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen has revealed why he turned down the chance to wear the captain’s armband during Galatasaray S.K.’s 3–1 win over Alanyaspor.

In the 79th minute, captain Lucas Torreira, who impressed with a goal and an assist, was substituted, and the armband was handed to İlkay Gündoğan. Gündoğan then offered it to Osimhen, but the Nigerian striker politely declined and returned it.

After the match, Osimhen explained that his decision was out of deep respect for Gündoğan, describing him as a calm and visionary leader who deserves the responsibility.

“İlkay is someone I respect very much, he is very valuable to me,” Osimhen told the Galatasaray website.

“He is a person known worldwide. He is both calm and motivating. He is someone we can always talk to. He is very visionary. When he brought me the captain’s armband, it felt strange. I gave it back so he could lead us. He helps us every time he comes into the game. He is someone who deserves love.”
