Tennis legend Venus Williams has revealed how she had to battle a serious illness while competing in the 2016 Wimbledon doubles alongside her sister. She shared her story in an interview with NBC News.

Venus admitted that before the final match of the tournament, she was suddenly struck by unbearable pain, which nearly kept her from stepping onto the court.

"[I was] just laying on the floor in the locker room. Like, it's gonna pass, it's gonna pass. And thank God Serena got the doctor. And I was able to get up and eat and start playing [which was] bad luck for our opponents," the elder Williams sister recalled.

At first, Venus thought the pain was related to Sjögren's syndrome, which she had been aware of since 2011. But she later discovered the real issue was a fibroid. She managed to fully recover from the illness last year, after successfully undergoing surgery to remove the fibroid.

Venus decided to share this story as part of Fibroid Awareness Month, which is observed in July.
