Vélez Turn to Teen Sensation Montoro for Crucial Clash With Olimpia

Vélez Sarsfield are set to field 17-year-old sensation Álvaro Montoro in their starting lineup for Wednesday’s crucial Copa Libertadores match against Olimpia in Paraguay, according to TyC Sports. The young midfielder, who scored a stunning last-minute winner against Peñarol in their group stage opener, appears to have earned a spot in Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s eleven as the team seeks consistency under his new leadership.
The match at Estadio Defensores del Chaco marks a critical moment for Vélez, who are currently sitting in the relegation zone of the domestic league after a weekend defeat to Rosario Central. With their league form faltering, Schelotto is opting for his strongest available lineup, and Montoro’s inclusion adds attacking flair to a side now expected to line up in a 4-3-2-1 formation.
One selection question remains in midfield, where Francisco Pizzini, recently returning from injury, could replace Imanol Machuca, who started against Peñarol but didn’t feature in the loss to Central. The defense is expected to remain unchanged, with Tomás Marchiori in goal and a back four of Agustín Lagos, Emanuel Mammana, Valentín Gómez, and Elías Gómez.
Alongside Montoro in midfield will be Claudio Baeza and Agustín Bouzat, the latter dropping deeper to accommodate the attacking shift. Up front, Maher Carrizo and Braian Romero will be joined by either Pizzini or Machuca, depending on final decisions.
Vélez hope Montoro’s spark can ignite another memorable Libertadores night as they look to steady their campaign in continental play.
