VAR to be introduced in South Africa: when to expect changes in refereeing

Teams in the South African Premier League, including Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Stellenbosch, have repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with refereeing errors that cost them crucial points and tournament eliminations. Questions about unfair decisions have been raised frequently this season, including a recent incident where Peter Shalulile's legitimate goal was disallowed for offside.
To address this issue, it has been decided to implement the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in South Africa. Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie confirmed that the introduction of VAR in the country will take place in April 2025. This technology is expected to significantly improve the quality of refereeing by minimizing errors and enhancing fairness in games.
Thus, the implementation of VAR will be an important step in the development of football in South Africa, helping to make refereeing decisions more accurate and fair.
