USL Championship Week 6: Miami Stuns San Antonio, Oakland Still Far From Convincing
Week 6 of the USL Championship delivered thrilling moments, first wins for three clubs, and a mix of optimism and concern across the standings, according to USLsoccer.com.
Orange County SC snapped a three-game winless streak with a 2-1 victory over Sacramento Republic in a heated California clash. After dominating the first half, OCSC withstood heavy pressure late, thanks to goalkeeper Colin Shutler and a series of crucial defensive blocks.
In Texas, Miami FC continued its surprising dominance over San Antonio FC. After ending SAFC’s unbeaten home streak in 2023, Miami stunned them again with a 2-1 win—its first in 224 days—behind goals from Knutson and Bonfiglio.
The Charleston Battery also impressed in a 2-1 comeback win over Pittsburgh, with Cal Jennings and MD Myers forming a dangerous partnership up top despite barely exchanging passes. Meanwhile, Loudoun United maintained its lead in the East with a 2-1 road win over Tampa Bay, led by goals from Aboukoura and Leggett.
In the West, New Mexico United extended its run of tight wins with a 1-0 victory over North Carolina. The team now has four wins this season, all by a single goal, a pattern that echoes last year’s success.
Colorado Springs showed improvement despite a 2-1 loss to Monterey Bay. They outshot their hosts but suffered yet another late-game collapse, their fourth goal conceded after the 75th minute.
Oakland Roots finally got a win but remain a concern. Despite Prentice’s brace in the 2-1 win over Tulsa, their defensive metrics—including the league’s second-worst xGA—suggest the club still has a long road ahead to contend seriously this season.
