Unique three out of three! Atlético set an insane record that no one can match
Atlético have truly worked their magic in the UEFA Super Cup.
Details: Atlético Madrid stand alone as the only Europa League winners to have lifted the UEFA Super Cup in the modern era of the competition — and they’ve done it not once, but three times. Official UEFA stats confirm it: since Zenit’s triumph in 2008, no other Europa League representative apart from Atlético has managed to defeat the Champions League holders in the battle for this trophy. The Madrid side pulled it off in 2010, 2012, and 2018.
Their first triumph arrived in 2010. Fresh off their Europa League victory, Atlético faced Champions League winners Inter and cruised to a confident 2-0 win. Just two years later, the Madrid giants returned to the Super Cup and dismantled Chelsea in a stunning 4-1 rout. Both times, the Spanish club entered the match as Europa League champions — and both times, they took home the trophy.
In 2018, history repeated itself for a third time. After defeating Marseille in the Europa League final, Atlético earned the right to face Real Madrid, who had just claimed a third straight Champions League crown. The Madrid derby in the Super Cup was full of drama: regulation time ended in a draw, but Atlético pushed on in extra time and clinched a 4-2 victory.
This record is even more impressive when compared to the fate of other Europa League winners. Sevilla, Chelsea, Manchester United, Villarreal, Eintracht, Tottenham, and other holders of Europe’s second-most prestigious club trophy have all failed to replicate the Spanish side’s feat. In 2026, Aston Villa had a chance to break the streak — but Unai Emery’s men fell 2-1 to PSG. So, Atlético’s unique record survived yet another Super Cup edition.
What’s more, Atlético remain perfect in this competition: three appearances, three victories. With three trophies, the Madrid club sits among the most successful teams in UEFA Super Cup history.
