Unbelievable twist brewing: 40-year-old Sergio Ramos is close to his first ever Premier League chapter

The Premier League may be about to welcome one of the most decorated defenders in football history for the very first time, at an age when most legends are long retired.

Details: Aston Villa are in talks to sign free agent Sergio Ramos and bring the 40-year-old Spaniard to England for the first time in his career. A deal is reportedly close, with the former Real Madrid captain expected to undergo a medical next week. Ramos has been without a club since leaving Monterrey in December 2025.

Villa's move is born of necessity as much as romance: Unai Emery's side, still winless after a nightmare start to the season, have been hit by long-term injuries to Pau Torres and Ian Maatsen, leaving the squad desperately short of defensive experience. And experience is one thing Ramos has in absurd quantities: four Champions League titles and a record number of appearances for Real Madrid, a World Cup and two European Championships with Spain, late spells at PSG, Sevilla and Monterrey, where he captained the side and played at the expanded Club World Cup before his contract expired last December. Rather than retire, the veteran spent 2026 exploring other avenues, including an attempt with an investment group to buy a controlling stake in his beloved Sevilla, but the boots were never hung up. Now, nine months after his last competitive match, the old warrior could be about to test himself for the first time in the most demanding league on the planet. Remarkably, despite a career spanning more than two decades, Ramos has never played a single match on English soil. If the medical confirms the famous engine still runs, Villa Park will witness something genuinely unique this season.

It's worth noting that at 40, Ramos would become one of the oldest outfield players in Premier League history, a list currently topped by the likes of Teddy Sheringham.
