At the end of the 2012/2013 season, Sir Alex Ferguson's 27-year era at Manchester United came to an end. With his departure, another era began at Old Trafford: turmoil and a constant search for the perfect coach.

Over the past 11 years, Manchester United have alternately been led by five permanent coaches and three acting coaches, and financial blogger Swiss Ramble has calculated that these coaching permutations have cost the Mancunians £57 million.

In 2014, David Moyes' resignation cost United £5 million. With Louis van Gaal's departure, the figures rose to £8 million, and after saying goodbye to José Mourinho in November 2018, they rose to £20 million.

Bills reflecting the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Ralf Rangnick were compiled in the same year and totalled 24 million, with several coaches also leaving.

That could rise by another 10 million if Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co decide to say goodbye to Erik ten Hag in the summer, but club bosses are determined to optimise costs and are not sure whether it is worth paying out that kind of money.
