Ukrainian skeleton athlete could be disqualified from the Olympics over helmet. President Volodymyr Zelensky had to intervene
Another scandal erupts at the Olympics.
Details: Today it was revealed that Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych plans to compete at the 2026 Olympics wearing a special helmet, dedicated to the memory of those who lost their lives at the hands of Russian forces.
Heraskevych's helmet features photos of fallen athletes, including children, all of whom were killed by Russian missiles.
However, the IOC responded in a questionable manner, stating that they could not allow Heraskevych to compete in such a helmet and requested he replace it—an appeal the Ukrainian athlete flatly refused.
"Some of them were my friends," Heraskevych stated.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also stepped into the situation, declaring that this gesture is not a political provocation but rather a tribute to all those who gave their lives for Ukraine.
At this moment, there is no official suspension of Heraskevych from Thursday's scheduled run, but the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine has already contacted the IOC, stating that any discrimination against Ukrainian athletes is unacceptable.
"As of now, the situation is that we have contacted the NOC of Ukraine, and this issue will be resolved. So, for now, there are no threats of disqualification. We are currently awaiting detailed clarifications, which I hope will arrive this evening," said Heraskevych.
