UEFA prepares VAR reform: fewer interventions and new rules for corners
UEFA is set to introduce changes to the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in the Champions League and other tournaments, aiming to streamline the process and reduce criticism from fans and pundits alike.
According to The Independent, the organization intends to move away from so-called "microscopic" interventions, which have often sparked frustration due to excessive scrutiny of incidents.
One of the key initiatives is to revise the approach to VAR during corner kicks. The plan is for VAR to be used only in cases of clear and obvious infringements that can be identified before play resumes, avoiding unnecessary delays.
UEFA's head of refereeing, Roberto Rosetti, is planning to meet with representatives from Europe's top leagues after the 2026 World Cup. The main goal is to establish unified VAR standards to minimize discrepancies in interpretation between different competitions.
