UEFA's club financial control body has completed its assessment of the implementation of financial fair play by European football's participants in the 2023/2024 season. As a result of the assessment, several clubs have been penalised by European football's main body.

According to a press release issued on UEFA's website, clubs were assessed for compliance with the new Cost Squad rule, which is being phased in from 2023. Under it, clubs' costs are divided by revenue and the ratio must equal or be below 90 per cent for the 2023/2024 season.

Almost all clubs fell within this figure, but Aston Villa and Marseille were fined €60,000 and €20,000 respectively for failing to meet reporting deadlines. Ten clubs had other offences, including Milan, Inter, PSG and Besiktas. But they made amicable deals with UEFA.

And the one who failed to fulfil the Cost Squad rule was Roma. The Romans marginally exceeded the 90 per cent ratio and were fined two million euros by UEFA. A far more serious punishment is ripe for Turkey's Istanbul Başakşehir. The club from Istanbul:

will be excluded from European competitions for one season if it fails to fulfil the Cost Squad rule in the 2024/2025 season; restricted to an entry limit of 23 players and will not be able to bid for new players in the 2024/25 European season (Başakşehir takes part in the Conference League); fined €100,000.
