UEFA has adjusted its instructions for referees regarding the use of the video assistant referee (VAR) system. In the near future, VAR in Champions League matches will be used more selectively—only in cases of clear and obvious errors.

UEFA’s head of refereeing Roberto Rosetti, in an address to officials, stressed that the system should not be used for in-depth analysis of controversial or borderline incidents unless they contain a blatant mistake. According to him, excessive breaks and frequent interventions negatively impact the flow of the game.

Referees are also advised to assess potential simulation and handball situations more carefully. In particular, they must take into account the player’s intent, the natural position of the hands, and the overall context of the moment, rather than automatically penalizing every contact.

If the updated recommendations have a positive effect on the quality and tempo of Champions League matches, a similar approach could be extended to other UEFA competitions—the Europa League and Conference League.
