Chelsea have quickly shut down one of the most unexpected transfer stories of the day.

Details: According to renowned insider Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea will not sign experienced Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum. The London club are currently playing down all reports suggesting that the former Liverpool star could arrive at Stamford Bridge as a free agent.

The update comes only hours after Chelsea were linked with a surprise move for Wijnaldum. French journalist Santi Aouna had reported that the Blues contacted the midfielder as they explored the free-agent market in search of another option in the centre of the pitch.

Wijnaldum is available without a transfer fee after his contract with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq expired on July 1, 2026. However, Romano's latest information indicates that Chelsea are not planning to take the talks any further and the Dutchman's proposed return to the Premier League will not happen through Stamford Bridge.

It is worth noting that Wijnaldum spent five seasons at Liverpool between 2016 and 2021. According to the Reds' official website, he made 237 appearances, scored 22 goals and won four major trophies with the club, including the Premier League and Champions League.

Reminder: Wow! Liverpool legend could make shock Chelsea move
