Tragedy in Gijón. Sporting Gijón vs Leganés match called off for a heartbreaking reason
Sunday's Spanish Segunda clash between Sporting Gijón and Leganés was officially called off due to a tragic incident at the El Molinón stadium.
Details: The match had barely started when, in the third minute, referee Daniel Palencia Caballero was forced to halt the action. The reason: a medical emergency in the south stands, where a devoted home supporter required urgent assistance.
It was the Leganés players, who were in possession at the time, who first noticed something was wrong. They signaled to the referee to stop the game. The stadium's medical teams immediately activated emergency protocols, but despite the doctors' best efforts, the fan's life could not be saved. After 15 minutes of waiting on the pitch, both teams headed to the dressing rooms, and half an hour later, the stadium announcer confirmed the match had been definitively canceled.
Later, Sporting's management confirmed the sad news. The deceased was an 82-year-old man who had been an official club member (socio) for the past 40 years.
"Today is a very sad day for all of us. Rest in peace. All our support and love go out to his family and loved ones," read the statement from the Gijón club.
The new date for the fixture is yet to be announced.
Reminder: Former Bayern and PSG player Juan Bernat has joined Eibar, who compete in the Segunda.
