Forward Ahmed Refaat of the Egyptian club Future FC passed away after suffering a heart attack during a local championship match. The Egyptian Football Association's press service confirmed the tragic incident.
"The Board of Directors of the Egyptian Football Association prays that the Almighty God covers Ahmed Refaat with His infinite mercy and grants patience and solace to his family and loved ones... We belong to God, and to Him we shall return," the statement from the Egyptian Football Association said.
Refaat, aged 31, felt weak during the match against Al-Ittihad (0:0) on March 11. Two minutes before the end of the game, Ahmed lost consciousness and collapsed on the field. He remained in a coma since then.
Throughout his career, Refaat played 211 matches, scoring 46 goals and providing 40 assists. He also represented the Egyptian national team in seven matches, scoring two goals and making one assist.
