A horrific tragedy struck the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo, claiming the lives of prominent figures from the world of sports.

According to the Associated Press, on the morning of April 8, the roof of a nightclub collapsed during a merengue concert. Latest reports indicate that at least 98 people have died and another 160 were injured.

Among the victims is former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel, who spent his career with the New York Mets, New York Yankees, and Los Angeles Dodgers. Rescuers had earlier pulled Dotel from the rubble and rushed him to a hospital. Dominican baseball player Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera also perished.

Also among the deceased is the sister of seven-time MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz, Nelsy. The causes of the tragedy are currently being investigated, and rescuers have been working at the scene for almost a day.
