Tragedy: 22-year-old footballer from Germany’s fifth division found dead
Luca Meixner, a footballer for SSV Reutlingen, a club in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg (fifth tier of German football), was found dead in his bed on December 27. The heartbreaking news was later confirmed by his club, which shared an official post on Instagram.
The announcement came as a shock to everyone who knew Meixner. The club expressed its deepest condolences to his family.
“Last weekend we received the terrible news that our player Luca Meixner died unexpectedly on Friday, December 27th at the age of 22. The entire SSV family is deeply saddened and stunned. His teammates, all committees and employees mourn with Luca's bereaved family and our thoughts are with his family, friends and companions. We ask that the privacy of Luca's family be respected during this difficult time,” read the club’s statement.
The cause of the young footballer’s death has not been disclosed.
Meixner began his career in the club’s youth teams and made his debut for the senior squad in 2021. Since then, he appeared in 100 matches, scoring six goals.
His last game for Reutlingen was on December 7, in the final Oberliga match before the Christmas break.
