In the quarterfinals, they survived a wild shootout with Lyon, eventually triumphing 7-6, and then crushed Athletic Bilbao 7-1 in the semifinals. This is United's first European final since the 2016/17 season, when they defeated Ajax 2-1 to lift the Europa League trophy.
