Tottenham fan arrested for abusing Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount
A 19-year-old man was detained after allegedly abusing Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount during the Premier League Matchweek 11 clash against Tottenham on Saturday.
Details: According to The Athletic, the suspect was among the spectators at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but was escorted out after a club official overheard the alleged abuse and reported it to the police.
The fan was arrested on suspicion of “intentional harassment, alarm or distress” and has been released on bail pending further investigation, which is ongoing.
Tottenham stated that it supports the police investigation and will take “strong action” against any supporter found to have used discriminatory language.
“The club is aware of the arrest of a supporter for an alleged verbal abuse of an opposition player during Saturday’s Premier League match against Manchester United. All ticket holders were reminded before the game about discriminatory chanting, particularly homophobic abuse,” the club statement read.
Mason Mount spent 19 minutes on the pitch in the match, which ended in a 2-2 draw, coming on as a substitute for Matheus Cunha with the score at 1-0 to the visitors. Reports indicate he was not made aware of the incident.
Reminder: Forward Joshua Zirkzee is planning to leave Manchester United this winter.
