Real Madrid veteran Toni Kroos had an outstanding season for the team. He helped Los Blancos secure the league title, win the Champions League, and the Spanish Super Cup. This season, he made 48 appearances, scoring one goal and providing ten assists.

However, the true shock for fans was the German's decision to retire at the end of the European Championship, which will be held in his homeland.

Many had predicted a contract extension for him, similar to what another team veteran, Luka Modrić, had done. Moreover, Real Madrid was ready to continue their partnership with the midfielder.

Kroos, however, decided to leave the team after the Champions League final victory over Borussia Dortmund, leaving a remarkable legacy, which he cites as the main reason for his departure from football. Marca quotes him saying:

"I want Real Madrid fans to remember me as the 34-year-old Toni Kroos who ultimately had his best season at Real Madrid.

I take it as a compliment that many people think it is still too early."

Following the Champions League final, Toni Kroos was granted an extended rest before joining the national team ahead of their first Euro 2024 match against Scotland. The midfielder will strive to perform just as spectacularly at the continental championship and win the upcoming tournament, which could provide an even more extraordinary ending to Kroos's footballing story.
