England and AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori has explained why he chose to play for the Three Lions instead of Nigeria, saying the Super Eagles “never called” him.

Tomori, born in Canada to Nigerian parents and raised in England, progressed through Chelsea’s academy before moving to AC Milan, where he became a key defender. Eligible for Nigeria, Canada, and England, he represented all three at youth level but ultimately committed to England, making five senior appearances so far.

Speaking on the Filthy Fellas Podcast, Tomori said he switched from Canada because “the England Academy manager reached out” and when England later called him up, “I knew I had to go… if I said no, would I ever get a call-up again?” He recalled winning the U-20 World Cup with teammates like Lookman and Abraham, noting it “felt like Chelsea again.”

Tomori said he might have considered Nigeria, especially with friends like Ola Aina, Lookman and Alex Iwobi there, but stressed: “They never officially called me… so I never had a choice to make.”

He also reflected on his upbringing, sharing that his father prioritised academics and encouraged him to study players like Essien and George Weah.

Tomori last played for England in their 2-0 win over Malta in November 2023.
