Time to go back to the Championship? Lampard's Coventry have equalled an unwanted Premier League record
Coventry City have equalled one of the most unwanted records in the history of England's top flight. Frank Lampard's side have lost all four of their opening matches of the season without managing to score a single goal.
According to OptaJoe, Coventry have become just the fifth team in the history of the English top flight to begin a league campaign with four consecutive defeats while failing to score. The previous teams to do so were Derby in the 1899/00 season, Stoke City in 1906/07, Preston North End in 1924/25 and Crystal Palace in 2017/18.
Lampard has therefore found himself in charge of a team that have matched an unwanted record which has stood for more than a century. Coventry's attacking problems look particularly worrying given the situation in Europe's other major leagues.
There are also teams in Europe's top five leagues that have yet to score after the opening rounds. Alongside Coventry, Tottenham are still without a goal in England, while Germany's Paderborn and Hamburg have also failed to find the net.
The start of the season has become a serious test for Lampard. Coventry must end their goal drought as soon as possible, otherwise the team risk becoming firmly established among the Premier League's biggest disappointments and could emerge as the leading candidates for a return to the Championship.
