Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has once again spoken out about the problems plaguing modern football and the urgent need for structural reforms. According to him, the current football model is no longer sustainable—neither economically nor in terms of player workload.

Details: Speaking at a football gala, the Napoli president stated that the current relegation system discourages club owners from investing in their teams’ development.

“Relegation is a huge mistake. When this threat is hanging over your head, you’re afraid to invest,” De Laurentiis emphasized.

The Neapolitan club’s president cited the NBA as an example, highlighting how the absence of relegation has allowed all franchises to become billion-dollar entities thanks to stability and the opportunity to invest in long-term projects.

De Laurentiis also stressed that unpredictable player injuries create serious challenges for clubs.

"Problems always stem from injuries, which are impossible to foresee. No one expected seven players of such caliber to be sidelined. In football, everything is either a tragedy or a celebration," said De Laurentiis.

He also pointed out that sports organizations often use clubs as tools to strengthen their own power.

It’s worth noting that reigning Serie A champions Napoli currently sit second in the league table.

Reminder: Napoli head coach Antonio Conte was named Serie A Coach of the Year.
