This Day in History: Six Years Ago Ajax Knocked Real Madrid Out of the Champions League
March 5 will long remain a special day for Ajax fans. Here's why.
Details: Exactly six years ago, on March 5, 2019, the Amsterdam club authored one of the most stunning upsets in the Champions League of the current century.
In the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16, Ajax lost at home to Real Madrid with a score of 1-2. Obviously, heading to the Santiago Bernabéu, Erik ten Hag's team was the clear underdog.
However, by the 18th minute, Ajax was ahead 2-0 following goals from David Neres and Hakim Ziyech. And in the 62nd minute, Dusan Tadic's incredible free-kick strike dashed Real's hopes of success, as the away goals rule was still in effect then.
In the end, Ajax won 4-1, reaching the tournament's semi-finals, where they lost to Tottenham only in the final moments.
Reminder: Yesterday, Real Madrid defeated Atletico 2-1 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 for the 2024/25 season. This victory marked the club's 300th in the history of the tournament.
