"Things went very badly": Füllkrug candidly reflects on his move to West Ham
With David Moyes’ departure, hopes were high for a reset at West Ham under Julen Lopetegui. One of the key additions meant to aid this transition was Borussia Dortmund forward Niclas Füllkrug. However, the German striker’s time in London has not gone smoothly.
Details: Füllkrug admitted that his move to West Ham was a risky decision, one that has yet to pay off. Part of the struggle has been due to an Achilles tendon inflammation, which has prevented him from performing at his best.
Quote: "I knew I was taking a step backward and accepting a certain risk, that I wouldn’t be playing internationally (in Europe) next year, maybe even the year after, and that I was making a big, big change.
I was aware of this and spoke a lot with the coach, as well as with Tim Steidten, whom I know from my time at Werder, so we had close communication. Of course, we had very different goals. For me, things have not gone well, to say the least.
I developed Achilles tendon inflammation, and it’s been extremely frustrating. I’ve had something like this before, and it lasted six weeks, but now it’s dragged on, and this phase has been an absolute disaster. You just want to play and feel like you’re close to doing so, but then another setback happens," Füllkrug told BILD.
