Thiago Almada Could Return to Botafogo for Club World Cup Shot
Thiago Almada’s stellar performances for Argentina against Uruguay and Brazil have placed him back in the spotlight, and his next move could bring him back to Brazil. According to Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte, Botafogo are reportedly considering bringing Almada back for the Club World Cup, which kicks off in the United States on June 15.
The 23-year-old midfielder, who filled in for Lionel Messi with flair and confidence, scored a brilliant goal in Montevideo and impressed again in Buenos Aires, strengthening his claim for a regular spot under Lionel Scaloni ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Currently on loan at Lyon from Botafogo, Almada moved to Ligue 1 in January as part of a workaround amid a transfer ban imposed on the French club. Since his arrival, he’s netted three goals in eight matches and quickly become a fan favorite. However, his transfer sparked controversy, with rival clubs questioning its legality.
Lyon’s ability to sign players will determine Almada’s future. If restrictions are lifted, a permanent transfer worth €27 million is on the table, potentially becoming Botafogo’s second-biggest sale after Luiz Henrique’s €33 million move to Zenit.
While Almada’s camp favors staying in Europe, Botafogo might attempt to re-sign him for one more season. With the transfer window opening early on June 1, the move could be timed perfectly ahead of the Club World Cup, where Botafogo are set to face PSG, Atlético Madrid, and Seattle Sounders in Group B.
