"They need to understand": Čeferin insists clubs need more matches
The debate over football’s congested calendar was one of the hottest topics last year. While discussions about excessive fixtures have quieted down, UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin appears ready to reignite the controversy.
Details: The head of European football stated that if clubs want to pay players higher wages, they need to generate more revenue—and to do that, they must play more matches.
Quote:
“The match calendar is completely full, with no space for additional games. Players are very busy, maybe even too much. But in reality, most complaints come from highly paid players.
However, the situation is complex because clubs need more matches to pay their players and coaches. If there were fewer games, their business would not be profitable.
A strict salary cap is probably impossible. We have already limited the percentage of revenue clubs can spend on wages to 70 percent. Many clubs are struggling with this and want to increase the limit to at least 80 percent, so we might have to adjust.
Clubs need to understand that if they want to pay their players, they need more matches,” Čeferin said on Delo TV.
Reminder: Previously, before winning the Ballon d'Or, Rodri stated that players could go on strike if the fixture schedule is not reduced.
