Referees and other members of the judiciary working at Greek Super League matches fear for their safety.

They collectively announced their intention to stop working because of what has recently been happening in the stands during matches, writes Reuters.

"In recent years, referees, both Greek and foreign, have become constant victims of bullying, threats, physical and verbal attacks. This has led to football becoming a toxic environment," the referees said in a statement.

The source also writes that the chief referees and their assistants refuse to work at the matches of the 14th round of the country's top division. They agree to return to work only after safe conditions have been ensured. In a statement, the judges said they made the decision to protect themselves and their families.

It is noteworthy that recently cases of attacks on judges in Greece have become more frequent. There were episodes when fans burned cars and houses of referees.
