On Monday evening, the former German national team footballer Bernd Hölzenbein passed away at the age of 78 after a prolonged illness.

Hölzenbein won the silver medal at the 1976 European Championship and was part of the 1974 World Cup-winning German team, scoring in both the final matches. In total, he played 40 matches for the German national team and scored 5 goals.

He is the top scorer for Eintracht Frankfurt (420 matches/160 goals). With this team, he won the UEFA Cup and was a three-time winner of the German Cup.

After retiring from his football career, Hölzenbein worked at Eintracht Frankfurt as a vice president and later held the position of club scout.
