The world champion with the German national team has stepped down as coach. The reason will surprise Sven Hoppe/dpa

The career of former Germany midfielder Lothar Matthäus can truly be called a stellar one. World Champion (1990) and European Champion (1980), winner of the Ballon d'Or (1990). However, not everything with him so brightly turned out with coaching.

After working with Rapid Wien, the national teams of Hungary and Bulgaria, the star German in September 2022 took over the children's team of the club Grünwald, where his son Milan plays. However, Matthäus left the team after two years, and for a very non-trivial reason.

As Lothar himself admitted, it was easier for him to work with children than with their parents:

‘I resigned as coach. It was a successful two years. The players gave me less trouble than their parents. And then I thought, I'm on the phone all day and I have to listen to everything I do wrong.

Everybody's kids don't play enough. Then I thought: let someone else do it, maybe they can do it better,’ Matthäus said.

But even outside Grunwald, the renowned former footballer has plenty to do. He also works in television and is a shareholder in the Ghanaian club Accra Lions.
