West Ham United have officially been relegated from the English Premier League. The fate of the London club was sealed in the final, 38th round match of the season against Leeds United, after which the Hammers lost all chances of staying in the top flight.
Their situation was made even more difficult not only by their own result, but also by events in a parallel fixture. Tottenham managed to defeat Everton, which finally dashed any remaining hopes for West Ham, and even a resounding win couldn't provide consolation.
This relegation marks a historic and extremely painful moment for the London side. West Ham are dropping out of the Premier League for the first time in 15 years. The last time the club faced relegation from the English top division was at the end of the 2010/11 season, when they finished bottom of the table.
Since returning to the top flight, the club managed to become a regular in the Premier League, and in recent years even consistently fought for European spots and achieved significant success on the international stage.
