One of the most audacious stadium concepts in football history is floating away. Saudi Arabia has quietly put the NEOM Stadium, the suspended centrepiece of its 2034 World Cup bid, on ice.

Details: According to RMC Sport, Saudi Arabia could scrap plans for its €2.5 billion NEOM Stadium ahead of the 2034 World Cup. The 46,000-seat stadium was planned to sit 350 metres above ground as part of the futuristic The Line project, and delays and spending cuts have now put the project in doubt.

Reuters, citing two sources familiar with the project, confirmed that plans for the arena have been shelved indefinitely following delays and the scaling back of The Line development, with the construction database MEED Projects now listing NEOM Stadium as on hold and giving it no completion date. The stadium was to have been one of the most ambitious elements of the Saudi bid: a 46,000-seat arena perched more than 350 metres above the desert inside The Line, the mirrored 100-mile city that was the flagship of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's giga-project programme, hosting matches from the group stage through to the quarter-finals and originally scheduled for completion in 2032. The retreat follows PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan's April admission that The Line was no longer a priority and not vital before 2030. Saudi Arabia is facing growing fiscal pressure, with the finance ministry projecting a larger deficit and a 3.6 percent contraction in real GDP, and Riyadh has been shifting investment away from costly giga-projects towards those promising quicker economic returns. No replacement venue has been announced, and Saudi authorities have not publicly removed NEOM Stadium from the World Cup programme, insisting substantial delivery milestones have been achieved while total stadium and infrastructure spending for the tournament is estimated at around $22.7 billion. If the venue does disappear, the 2034 tournament will lose its most spectacular calling card, a symbol of an era when the kingdom's ambitions knew no ceiling.

It's worth noting that the original bid evaluated by FIFA in December 2024 listed NEOM Stadium among 15 venues across five cities, and even planned the group stage draw at The Line Convention Center. Its potential removal would mark a significant change from the plan FIFA approved and could shift the tournament's symbolic center of gravity firmly back towards Riyadh.

Reminder: A lifeline from the Arab world! Infantino gets powerful backing amid the revolt.
