The second racket of the world, following Swiatek, leaves Wimbledon
Emma Navarro and Cori Gauff faced off in a decisive match to determine the quarterfinalist of Wimbledon 2024. The match ended quite unexpectedly: the world's second-ranked player suffered a defeat and exited the tournament.
The contest was challenging for Gauff. Coming into this match, she had shown confident play in previous rounds in London and was considered a clear favorite. In the first set, Cori lost a crucial game on her serve at 4-5 in favor of her opponent. The second set turned out to be smoother for Navarro. She secured victory with just one break.
Wimbledon WTA. Round of 16
Emma Navarro (USA, 17) defeated Cori Gauff (USA, 2) 6-4, 6-3.
Interestingly, Gauff has never advanced past the fourth round at Wimbledon in her career. Navarro, on the other hand, reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal. On Tuesday, July 9th, she will face Italy's Jasmine Paolini, who advanced today after Madison Keys retired from their match.
