A seemingly innocent pastime for a Rennes player turned into a tragedy and possible criminal liability.
Mathis Lambourde, an 18-year-old footballer and his underage friend were riding an electric scooter in the centre of Rennes when they hit a 51-year-old woman. She died of her injuries six days later in hospital. Now Lambourdewill have to answer to the court.
As reported by Ouest-France, on 23 August in the court of Rennes will hold a hearing, to which the young player was summoned. He is accused of "wilful homicide by a driver of a vehicle" as well as "clear wilful breach of the obligations of safety and caution".
It is not yet known what punishment he will face. The club itself has not yet commented on Lambourde's actions.
The young 18-year-old striker is considered one of Rennes' academy's biggest hopes. He made his Ligue 1 debut against Lille in September 2023 and has played 28 games for the France U17 and U18 national teams, scoring 12 goals.
