Everything was decided in a matter of minutes.

Details: In a follow-up interview with Soccer Laduma, Sechaba Mofokeng shared all the ins and outs of the transfer tug-of-war between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns over his son, Rele Mofokeng.

Even the father himself didn’t know which club his son would choose until the very last moment:

"I'll be honest. May his soul rest in peace. There was a Sundowns scout—a good man, I’ve forgotten his name, but he would come to our house every weekend without fail. He told us they were very interested and would come back with an official offer. We said, 'Alright, we’ll wait.'
But that very night, a knock at the door changed everything. The Pirates knocked on our door. They didn’t say, 'We’ll come back tomorrow.' They said, 'We’re here and we want to take your son.' You could tell they meant business," Sechaba told Soccer Laduma.

At that moment, the father wanted to say yes on the spot, but he knew this was about his son’s future. So he immediately called Rele:

"We called Rele and asked him directly: 'There’s Sundowns, and there’s Pirates. Who do you want to play for?' He didn’t hesitate: 'I want to play for Pirates,' he said."

The next day, the Pirates came back and helped him tackle all the challenges that came with the move—including arranging his schooling, as Rele was still a student at the time. Since he was underage, his parents had to sign the contract on his behalf.

Today, as we know, Relebohile Mofokeng is one of Africa’s top young players and a highly sought-after talent for many European clubs.

Reminder: Mofokeng’s father: "I don’t want to see my son in the South African league"
