One of the most surreal transfer breakdowns of the year has occurred in the Spanish league because of strict financial control regulations.

Details: The expected move of former Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal to Getafe has definitively collapsed for an unprecedented reason: La Liga officials vetoed the deal, deeming the salary offered to the footballer too low.

After becoming a free agent, the 34-year-old Spaniard was determined to remain in the capital region and agreed to a modest salary of around €400,000 per season at Getafe. However, the league’s economic committee ruled that a player of such stature could not earn so little and forcibly calculated his theoretical market value. The virtual figure set by the officials was several times higher than the club’s salary cap, making registration impossible.

An additional obstacle came from the defender’s own demands: Carvajal insisted on including a special clause in his contract allowing him to leave the team in January if an attractive offer from a top club arrived, but the dark-blue club’s management rejected the request.

It is worth noting that La Liga’s financial control rules are designed to combat the artificial understatement of official salaries and shadow payments. However, in this case, the letter of the regulations left the six-time UEFA Champions League winner without a club in his home league.
