The Open Championship. Where and when to watch the golf major
This week, the final golf major of the current season, The Open Championship or British Open, will take place. It begins on Thursday, July 18, and will continue until July 21.
Founded in 1860, The Open Championship was initially held annually at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. Later, the venue alternated among a select group of coastal golf courses in the United Kingdom. The tournament is organized by The R&A.
The Open Championship is one of the four major men's golf tournaments, the others being The Masters, the PGA Championship, and the U.S. Open. Since the PGA Championship was moved to May in 2019, The Open Championship has become the fourth and final major of the year.
The prize fund for The Open Championship in 2024 is $17 million, with the winner receiving $3.1 million, a record for the tournament. The reigning British Open champion is Brian Harman.
