The Netherlands have already decided on the player who will replace Barcelona's central midfielder Frenkie de Jong in the squad for Euro 2024.
Surprisingly, instead of another midfielder, the coaching staff has called up Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen, who spent the second half of the past season on loan at Borussia Dortmund.
Maatsen was initially in the Netherlands' preliminary squad for Euro 2024 but was excluded from the final list.
The 22-year-old Maatsen has not yet played for the senior national team, though he has 17 appearances for the Netherlands U-21.
The Netherlands will play their first match of Euro 2024 against Poland on June 16. Ronald Koeman's team will also face France and Austria in the group stage.
