After Jürgen Klopp announced that he would leave Liverpool at the end of the season, many coaches were linked with the job at Anfield. The first and main candidate was former Liverpool player and current Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso. However, Alonso himself ruled out this possibility, stating that he would stay in Germany for at least another season.

There were various theories regarding Alonso's decision, but legendary Liverpool player Mark Lawrenson offered his perspective. According to the former centre-back, Alonso is hoping to secure the Liverpool job later, possibly after Arne Slot.

"People I talk to, and I feel the same way, think that maybe he wants to take this job after Mr. Slot. The pressure right now would be immense, and perhaps Alonso was very kind in saying, 'I would like to have this job, but not now.' That's the world we live in.

However, Liverpool will support him. There's no doubt about it because that's the kind of football club it is. They know he'll be different, and anyone who doesn't realize that isn't a true Liverpool fan."

If Alonso had agreed to manage Liverpool, he would have faced incredible pressure following his phenomenal season with Bayer Leverkusen.

It's worth noting that Arne Slot, who managed Feyenoord this season, will take the Liverpool managerial position starting June 1.
